Donald Jurney and Ginny Williams entirely fund this Fellowship which was established under the wing, and with the guidance, of the Newburyport Art Association, Newburyport, MA (a 501(3)(c) non-profit). intention is to provide an annual opportunity for a traditional painter to travel, work and study in Europe. Donald has twice (1980 and 2015) been the recipient of the kind and generous support of friends and collectors who enabled him to travel freely in Europe, where he painted, made drawings, visited countless museums to see and be inspired by great paintings and, maybe, where he spent just a little time eating croissants.
The Fellowship is intended to be a serious opportunity to paint and draw, without constraint, to deeply enrich one's self in the European cultural world. The required references are intended to insure the Fellowship's Board of the seriousness of the applicant and of the likelihood that the applicant will effectively use the grant. That said, the Fellow's time in Europe is expected to be fun, too, and to be an experience that is both broadening and enriching, informing the Fellow's work and life for years to come.

Donald Jurney was born in Rye, New York in 1945, and was educated at Columbia University, the Pratt Institute, and the Art Students League. Thirty-eight years ago he began his career with a one-man show at a temporary gallery space. Since then he has had over thirty-five one-person shows, in San Franscisco, New York, Boston and elsewhere. Through the years Jurney has lived and worked in the Hudson River Valley, England, and in the Berkshires of western Massachusetts. He has painted extensively in France and in the West of Ireland. His work is firmly rooted in the great plein air landscape tradition. Bearing the impression of the particular setting in which they were conceived, Jurney’s paintings are a summons to celebrate the poetry of the everyday beauty of nature. The artist now lives and maintains a studio on the North Shore of Boston where he continues to focus on sharing his distinct and inspiring vision of the landscape.

“Often a painting is a conversation between disparate shapes and forms, ... here brilliant, there disguised---in a carefully-conceived dance of light. This may be a celebration of a place, perhaps, or an investigation of an evanescent mood. For the viewer who has both the time and inclination to really look, one hopes to afford, by way of a painted surface wrought of subtleties, the opportunity to explore at leisure the wonder of the world in which we live.” - Donald Jurney
